Think for a moment about the protagonist-antagonist relationship of Katniss Everdeen and President Snow in The Hunger Games series. Have you noticed the symbolism Suzanne Collins conjures in order to accentuate the opposition between these two fierce warriors? What is Katniss' nickname? The Girl on Fire. And what about the President? His name is Snow. Even if you did not make the connection on first reading, it likely registered on some level, subconsciously. This sort of poetic symbolism wows readers and wins longtime fans.
Use it sparingly, subtly, but be sure to use it. Comments are closed.
